To me, caring for pets feels like one of the most fulfilling lines of work out there. Being able to build a unique relationship with each animal is so rewarding. Knowing that I am able to meet their needs, make them more comfortable, and bring joy into their days is such a special gift.
I am a lifelong animal lover who found my place in Long Beach after moving here for school. Since living here, I’ve fallen in love with the city and plan to stay. I grew up around animals and there’s never been a time in my life when I didn’t have a dog, cats or both. In high school I adopted three rats and fell in love with them; I hope to be able to keep rats again in the future. Three years ago I adopted my soulmate dog, Mavis (I will take any opportunity to talk about her). I also have two cats with my roommates. Pet Waggin was the start of my professional experience with pets, and I have learned so much through Mary Ellen’s extensive training program.
Working with pets has taught me to slow down and let go of the productivity mindset that I rush through my daily life with. When I’m walking a dog, they won’t care whether we make it one block or two, but they will definitely be affected by any stressed, hurried energy that I bring to the walk. I’ve learned that being present and connecting with the animal at their own pace benefits the pet much more, and helps my own mindset too.
I’ve been so grateful to be a part of this amazing team and to be able to learn as much as I have. The opportunities to learn about dog behavior, health, communication and training have been indispensable and that knowledge has helped so much with giving the best care I can to the pets at work as well as my personal animals. Mary Ellen runs her business with integrity, and every one of my fellow team members has been so clearly passionate about what they do.
Pet care tip: The easiest thing that can make the biggest difference in building trust with every single animal you meet is gaining some basic knowledge of dog and cat body language. They tell us so much without words, and this can go a long way in making sure we respect their boundaries and let them know they are safe with us.
Fun Facts About Lena
Favorite Drink:
Thai tea with boba!
Top Skill:
am an artist - and I particularly love to draw pets!
If I Were a Dog Breed, I’d Be:
A chocolate brown cocker spaniel.
Favorite Spot to Walk in Long Beach:
My dog and I both love the streets around Hilltop Park in Signal Hill.
Favorite Dog Accessory
I think a lot of people underestimate the value of a doggie water bottle! Keeping pups hydrated throughout the walk prevents them from drinking too much at once and can reduce attempts to drink out of nasty puddles.
Fun Quote or Motto:
“Perhaps one central reason for loving dogs is that they take us away from this obsession with ourselves. When our thoughts start to go in circles, and we seem unable to break away, wondering what horrible event the future holds for us, the dog opens a window into the delight of the moment.” - Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson
Favorite Pup Snack to Bring Along:
Lots of dogs love cooked or pureed pumpkin, and it can help with digestion in moderation. I like to add it to a lick mat.
Favorite Movie:
Isle of Dogs
