Beat the heat: indoor enrichment activities for dogs in Long Beach

Summer in Long Beach can be scorchin’!

And when temperatures soar, even the most energetic dogs can struggle with the heat. On extremely hot days, sidewalks can burn sensitive paws and humidity can make breathing difficult, not to mention the danger of dehydration and overheating.

Side note: Not sure if it’s too hot? Do the “five-second test”: place the back of your hand on the pavement. If you can’t hold it there comfortably for five seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Read more tips in our blog post on mistakes you’re making with your pets in the summer heat

When outdoor walks or play become unsafe, we encourage our clients to move enrichment time indoors. And when it comes to our pet care services, we’ll use our discretion in extreme weather conditions. If it’s too hot to safely walk dogs in Long Beach, we’ll take them out for a quick potty break and spend the rest of the visit providing enrichment activities indoors.

Benefits of enrichment for dogs

We can talk about why your dog needs enrichment all day, but here’s the TL;DR edition: mental stimulation helps dogs stay happy, healthy and entertained and is a great option when outdoor adventures need to be put on pause.

Enrichment activities tap into your pup’s natural instincts to sniff, search, problem-solve and explore. Regular enrichment can reduce boredom, prevent destructive behavior, ease anxiety and provide valuable mental exercise.

So, if the heat index says “stay inside”, look to fun, easy indoor enrichment games to keep your Long Beach dog engaged.

5 easy indoor dog enrichment games for hot days

  1. The classic “find it game”

This simple scent activity encourages your dog to use their nose and brain at the same time.

Begin by asking your dog to stay while you hide a few treats around the room. Once released, encourage them to find it (yep, it’s that easy).

As your dog gets better at the game, you can make the hiding spots more challenging by placing treats under blankets, behind furniture or inside boxes. Nose work is incredibly enriching and can help build confidence in shy or anxious dogs!

  1. Puzzle toys

Puzzle toys are another excellent option for hot days. We often bring puzzle toys along on our visits, and they’re always a big hit with the pups!

Food-dispensing toys and treat puzzles encourage problem-solving while slowing down fast eaters. You can fill a toy with kibble, peanut butter, pumpkin puree or yogurt and freeze it for an extra cooling challenge. (Bonus: Frozen enrichment toys are especially great during heat waves!)

  1. Indoor obstacle courses

Pup needs to burn off some energy since they’re not going for a w-a-l-k?

Use household items like cushions, chairs, blankets and laundry baskets to create a fun obstacle course with tunnels and weaving paths. Guide your dog through the course using treats or toys as motivation, which will help improve coordination, build confidence and give energetic dogs a safe way to burn energy without having to step into the heat.

  1. Snuffle box

For dogs who love to shred and forage, try creating a “snuffle box.” Or, you can purchase a pre-made snuffle mat — one of our favorite enrichment activities for our canine clients, which you’ll often see featured on our social media feed

Simply fill a cardboard box or laundry basket with towels, paper or safe fabric scraps, then scatter treats or kibble throughout. Your dog will love digging, sniffing and searching for rewards. This activity satisfies natural foraging instincts and can keep dogs entertained for long stretches of time.

  1. Practicing new tricks

Who says training has to feel like homework? Enrichment keeps learning playful and rewarding, and is a great option to turn indoor time into productive time.

Teaching a new trick or practicing obedience cues gives your dog mental exercise while strengthening your bond. Short, positive sessions of five to 10 minutes can make a big impact. Read more in our blog post on positive reinforcement and why it’s a cornerstone of our own dog training service.

In short, hot weather doesn’t have to mean a bored dog. Indoor enrichment games can provide mental stimulation, physical activity and plenty of fun, while keeping your pup safe from dangerous temperatures.

When it’s too hot to head outside, bringing the play indoors is one of the best ways to help your dog stay happy and healthy all summer long! If you’d like to incorporate more enrichment into your pup’s day-to-day life, we also offer enrichment visits with customized activities tailored to their needs.

Have fun and stay cool, Long Beach!
